Salam Dr Maiza, I just did my open myomectomy sx to remove my 8cm & 3 cm uterine fibriod. This is my 30th day but i still have swollen abdomen and 24 hrs feeling bloated and light headed. If this normal? Today my doctor said this normal. But i dont feel fit to do anything at home
Salam Puan,
Generally, after an open myomectomy, it is not unusual to still have some abdominal swelling, bloating, and fatigue even at 4 weeks post-surgery, especially if the fibroids were large (8 cm and 3 cm) and the surgery involved significant handling of the uterus and abdomen.
However, most ladies would gradually notice improvement week by week and start feeling more functional by this stage.
The fact that you still feel bloated 24 hours a day, light-headed, and unfit to do normal activities deserves a little more attention. A few things that may need to be assessed include:
* Anaemia (low blood count), particularly if there was significant blood loss during surgery
* Constipation or slow bowel recovery
* Residual postoperative inflammation or fluid retention
* Poor nutrition, dehydration, or inadequate rest
* Less commonly, complications such as infection or a collection inside the abdomen
I would suggest:
✔️ your haemoglobin (Hb) if it has not been repeated after surgery.
✔️ Ensure adequate hydration, protein intake, and gentle mobilisation.
Seek an earlier review if you have:
* Fever
* Increasing abdominal pain or distension
* Vomiting
* Shortness of breath
* Heavy vaginal bleeding
* Dizziness that is worsening or causing you to almost faint
Since your own doctor has examined you and feels it is within the expected recovery process, that is reassuring. However, if your symptoms remain unchanged over the next few days or are significantly affecting your daily function, I would encourage another review and possibly repeat blood tests and an ultrasound.
Wishing you a smooth and complete recovery, insyaAllah.
🤍asAlways, dr.mai
